Metro DX Club
September 12, 2014
The meeting was called to order by President Jim Mornar,
N9TK with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. We were pleased to welcome
visitors Matt, KA9BBQ, his XYL Barb and Kurt, WB9FMC.
Health and welfare:
N9LAH reported on the condition of
We were very pleased to have Paul,
K9NU, in attendance after his recent surgery.
The July minutes are posted on the web site. A motion to accept
was made by W9MK and seconded by N9LAH.
The Treasurer’s Report was reviewed by W9ILY. It was noted that
we have changed our bank due to service charges imposed by our former bank. Our
complete Treasurer’s Report is in the “files” section on our Yahoo Group.
Approval was moved by K9PY and seconded by K9DRS.
Receipts for donations to the American Heart Association in memory
of W9LNQ and from the American Heart Association in memory of K9BWQ were
Past contests were reviewed by W9ILY. Metro finished #29 out of 38
in the 2014 CQWW WPX RTTY contest with 1,255,779 points. In the 2014 ARRL
International contests, the ARRL combines the CW and SSB entries and, because of
this, Metro fell into the Medium category with 12 entries and 1,626.945 points.
This was third from the bottom. Had we been in the Local category that is
limited to 10 member entries, we would have finished in the top 10. N9TK
reported that Val, NV9L, finished WPXSSB as #1 in North America.
There were no WUST awards requested or issued since last month.
N9TK reported on the Navassa (KP1) operation that should occur within the next
18 months. Since the relationship between the ham community and the Fish &
Wildlife Service has apparently become stronger, any modification to our WUST
award criteria will be postponed. Jim also noted that a Letter of Recommendation
had been sent supporting the Navassa operation.
Jim, N9TK, displayed the beautiful K9W DXpedition of the Year
Award that all DXpedition members had received.
Phil, N9LAH, reported that all had a fun time at our annual
Jim, N9TK, reported that Metro will sponsor the North America
plaque for the DX Marathon for two years. The cost will be approximately $30 for
each plaque. This will be good advertising for our club.
Metro will operate a Special Event Station on Saturday, November
22 between 10:00 and 18:00 on 40 SSB and 20 SSB. N9TK will open his shack for
40M and W9ILY and K9DRS may have their shacks available for 20M and other bands.
K9DRS will research the possibility of having an Illinois Proclamation made for
this event. A sample certificate was displayed.
N9TK reported on the status of the K9BWQ estate sale. Frank’s
XYL Delores had contacted Jim for assistance and they had agreed that Metro
would dispose of the equipment. The club will receive a 20% donation that will
be donated in Frank’s memory to DXpeditions and DXing. The only equipment
remaining at Frank’s QTH is the tower, antenna, HyTower, FT-1000, Commander
amplifier and tuner.
K9BWQ’s tower is a Tri-ex LM-470. A tower party will be needed
to bring it down. The antenna needs to be removed before winter arrives.
Dues: It was suggested that club dues be raised to $15 from $10
after December 31. Payment for 2015 can be made at the $10 level until 12/31. A
motion was made by K9DRS with a second by WA9LEY. Approval was unanimous.
Board elections will be made in November. Members were reminded to
begin thinking of nominations to be held at our October meeting.
Winter dinner: N9TK has contacted the Harvest House where we had
our 2014 dinner and Jim will follow up with them.
A motion was made by N9LAH and seconded by W9MK to close the
We all enjoyed a refreshment period that was followed by a
presentation of the Classic N1MMLogger program by John W9ILY.
NOTE: OUR OCTOBER
MEETING WILL BE HELD ON OCTOBER 24, THE 4TH FRIDAY OF OCTOBER. OUR
MEETING ROOM WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE ON OCTOBER 17.
